Thame Town suffered at the hands of a terrific individual display as they slumped to a 145-run defeat at Beaconsfield in Home Counties League Division 2 West on Saturday.
The home side's Australian player Matthew Gregory hit 120 and then proceeded to take 7-13 with his leg-spin as Thame crashed from 82-2 to 108 all out.
Thame’s opening bowlers Sam Lachlan – captaining the side in Rob Brooks’s absence – and Luke Merry, started well and restricted Beaconsfield's early scoring.
But Gregory stayed at the crease and then cut loose as the end of the innings drew near.
He was helped by a number of dropped catches and some indifferent fielding, including a farcical missed run out.
In pursuit of 254 for victory, Thame started steadily, but only the experienced Manoj Parmar could stay at the crease, eventually being caught for 47.
The batsman were tied down – 21 of the completed 46 overs – were maidens and Thame were soon settling for a draw.
This looked like being achieved at 82-2.
But some indisciplined shots from the remaining batsmen against Gregory's spin, saw them dismissed for a disappointing 108, with 4.5 overs to spare.
The result saw Thame slip from second to fifth in the table.
