Oxfordshire Under 16s were well-beaten by eight wickets in their latest match against Magdalen College School.

Oxon could not capitalise on a strong start, and the superb batting performance of Magdalen’s David Bunn took the game away from the county after a lengthy break for rain.

Oxon won the toss and opted to bat first on a flat pitch.

And the decision looked to be the right one as Nigel Hume and Sam Ryan got off to a positive start.

The pair put on 117 for the first wicket in a stand that was punctuated by a rain delay.

Ryan’s super knock of 68 came from 97 balls and included ten boundaries, while in-form Hume followed up his century in his previous match with a half century this time.

When Ryan and Hume fell, useful knocks from Harry Smith, Michael Beard and Richard Cook took Oxon to a competitive total of 184-3.

Magdalen had only 34 overs to reach the target, and it looked a tough challenge when they lost Tom Hogan in the first over of their reply, bowled by Phil Allen.

But a 124-run partnership between South African Bunn and George Rendall set up an exciting finish.

Rendall’s classy innings was eclipsed by that of Bunn, who produced an array of strokes all around the ground to finish unbeaten on 109 in 93 deliveries in a knock containing 13 boundaries and two sixes.

When Rendall was out, Magdalen captain Johnny Forrest joined Bunn to see his side to victory with four overs to spare.
