Magdalen College School, Oxford, triumphed at the English Primary Schools’ Chess Association’s national semi-finals at Brean Sands, Somerset.

The A team won all six of their matches, scoring 26 out of 30 points to finish first out of the 22 teams, who had qualified for this stage of the under 11s competition.

Magdalen’s top four boards were unbeaten.

Jack Bancroft and Alex Anderton, on boards three and four, notched a perfect six points each, while Cameron Hill and Daniel d’Souza-Eva, on boards one and two, scored five out of six with four wins and two draws.

Now Magdalen go through to the national finals – for the top eight teams in the country – in Somerset next month.

The school’s B team also did well to finish eighth with 17½ points after winning four of their six matches and losing the other two.

William Angwin was undefeated with five and a half out of six.

RESULTS MCS A: bt Christ Church, Wilts 5-0; bt King’s House won 4½-½; bt Broadclyst won 3½-1½; bt Colet Court A 4½-½; bt Brooklands 3½-1½; bt Ridgeway 5-0.

MCS B: lost to Broadclyst 5-0; bt Colet Court B 3-2; lost to St Edward’s, Bath 3-2; bt The Rackham 4½-½; bt Garden Suburb 4-1; bt St Sampson’s 4-1.
