James Constable says it will be a dream come true when he dons an England shirt in front of his home fans at the Kassam Stadium on Tuesday night.

Oxford United’s top scorer leads the line for England C against Belgium in the International Challenge Trophy final.

“It’s every boy’s dream to play for your country and to do it in front of your own fans is as good as it gets,” said Constable, who scored the crucial equaliser in Italy that took Paul Fairclough’s men through to the final.

“They’ve been fantastic to me and to all the team and I can’t wait to pull on an England shirt in front of them.

“Hopefully, I’ll be given the nod because representing your country is a massive buzz.

“It’s an incredibly proud feeling. I’m over the moon that I’ve been selected for the squad.

“I think it’s the highest honour you can achieve.

“I’ve just carried on training as if I was still in season. I’m just looking forward to a massive game, and I think the lads have been just counting down the days so we can pull on the shirts and do our job.”

Constable finished with 25 goals for Oxford, with 17 of them at the Kassam, and hit six in United’s last four home games. But this is his first appearance since signing a new three-year contract.

He added: “When you’re stood there singing the national anthem and you get that lump in your throat, you realise how blessed you are to be able to do what you are doing. You don’t take it for granted.”

The International Challenge Trophy is an under 23 competition consisting of eight teams split into two groups of four, and the group winners going through to the final.

Tickets, priced at £5 for adults and £1 for under 16s/over 65s/students, are available on the night.

England C: (from) Cronin (Ebbsfleet), Bartlett (unatt), Gleeson (Cambridge), Geohaghan (Kettering), Charles (Ebbsfleet), Densmore (Altrincham), Laird (Stevenage), Penn (Kidderminster), Newton (Droylsden), Tomlin (Rushden), Byrom (Stevenage), Constable (Oxford Utd), Fleming (Wrexham), Clayton (Alfreton), Hearn (Alfreton), Wroe (Torquay Utd).

TEN-YEAR-OLD Daniel Stevens will be the official mascot for Tuesday night’s game.

Daniel was the lucky winner of the Oxford Mail competition to find someone to lead the teams out.

Daniel’s mother, Paula, said that her son cannot wait.

“James Constable is his favourite Oxford United player and so to lead the teams out, and have the chance to be with him is just amazing,” she said.
