Oxfordshire's Robert Evans was crowned ABA cruiserweight champion after a dramatic points win over Merseyside’s Wayne Adeniyi in Sheffield.
And victory on amateur boxing’s big night completes a hat-trick of titles for the Banbury ace, who won back-to-back novice crowns before entering the senior category.
Having outpointed London champion Dan Woodgate 8-3 in the quarter-finals, followed by a 13-9 success over Dagenham’s Anthony Conquest 24 hours later, the stage was set for the showdown with Adeniyi at the English Institute of Sport.
The first two rounds of the final saw the tall Evans edge ahead 4-3 lead going into the last three-minute session.
Evans added another point to his tally before he received a public warning for repeated holding – a caution that moved his Vauxhall Motors rival into a 5-4 lead.
But the Banbury man stayed focused and started to thread together neat combinations of punches.
Adeniyi was rocked by a volley that prompted a standing count as the greater accuracy of Evans secured him the title by a 9-5 computerised score.
Blue is obviously a lucky colour for Evans – all his victories have come from emerging out of the blue corner.
He has star quality, but the 86kg division is not an Olympic weight.
If he is to figure in London 2012, a move to light-heavy (or up to heavyweight) must feature in his plans.
