Banbury had the better of their opening day draw at home to defending Division 1 champions High Wycombe, but were never close to winning on saturday.

With Andrew Sabin making a fine 91 in Banbury's 307-7, the hosts had a commanding total to defend.

Wycombe were still in contention at tea, but soon dropped off the required rate and settled for the draw.

Banbury chose to baton a flat track – and soon capitalised.

Sabin, more usually a second-team player these days, got the chance to open the innings with Damian Shirazi unavailable.

And he rolled back the years with a super knock containing 11 fours.

Ian Tew fell for 30, but with Craig Haupt motoring at the other end at more than a run a ball, Banbury picked up the pace.

Haupt was eventually caught on the boundary by Paul Sawyer as he we went for a second straight six.

Sabin and Simon Hole both fell to former Aston Rowant captain Simon Bird, but Banbury continued to make good progress.

New Zealander Ant Bullick made a rapid 48 off 45 balls on his Home Counties debut, while Shahbaz Ali continued his fine recent form with 51 not out.

Banbury lost a few late wickets, including that of captain Ian Hawtin who was easily stumped.

Spinner Chris Sketchley finished with 4-87, but no Wycombe bowler could turn the screw.

Chasing 308 in 54 overs was always going to be tough for Wycombe, but they were not totally out of it after reaching 88-2 at tea.

This left the visitors needing 6.3 runs per over to secure a great win.

The pacy Bullick proved Banbury's leading bowler with 3-47 and found the edge on many occasions.

Medium-pacer Haupt backed up his powerful batting with a tidy spell, and it was his spell alongside spinner Luke Ryan that squeezed the life out of Wycombe's chase.
