Berinsfield Girls ABC have launched a new initiative aimed at encouraging girls and women to take up boxing in Oxfordshire.
The idea is the brainchild of Naomi Hill, a trainer of Britain’s second all-female outfit to be established in England – the first was set up in Yorkshire last year.
Hill, 25, qualified as a coach last year and has been a regular in the corner all over the country.
But now she wants to concentrate on developing the female talent in the area.
“Lots of girls are interested in boxing, but the thought of going into a gym full of men can intimidate them and put them off,” she said.
“The idea is to have female-only sessions, where they can immediately feel at home. It also gives the club the chance to establish its own identity.
“Not every girl that comes through the door will have the potential to compete in the ring, but some might want to use the opportunity to get fit and, even, learn a few tips for self-defence.”
Jade Clark, 17, was Berinsfield’s first female competitor in the ring.
