Enstone Primary School finished fourth in the national mini hockey tournament at Surbiton in Surrey – the highest-placed state school in the country.
After winning their league, against teams from Bucks, Berks and Northants, the Enstone youngsters beat Oxford City 2-0 in the quarter-final before bowing out 4-0 in the semis to eventual winners Canterbury.
The Enstone team, coached by Carol Hicks, had reached the tournament by winning the Chipping Norton round, the West Oxon district section, and then the county round where they came up against not just schools, but hockey clubs’ junior teams.
The quarter-final win over Oxford City was especially sweet, as City had beaten them at the county stage.
