Didcot weightlifter Ben Watson continued his impressive progress with victory at the British Junior Open Championships at Alfreton, Derbyshire.

Competing in the 94kg class at the Atlas Gym, the 18-year-old, from the St Birinus Club, set a British record of 123kg in the snatch and with a clean and jerk of 150kg, he totalled 273kg to come out on top and also claim the best lifter award.

Three other St Birinus lifters posted personal bests at the championships.

Robert Green finished fifth in the 62kg class with a snatch of 73kg and a clean and jerk of 93kg for a total of 166kg, with clubmate Eddie Chambers sixth after recording a snatch of 70kg and a clean and jerk of 88kg for a total of 158kg.

Josh Cox was fifth in the 56kg class, with a snatch of 65kg and a clean and jerk of 85kg for a total of 150kg.

Green, Chambers and Cox have now been selected to represent England in a match against France and hosts Germany from July 2-5.
