Tadmarton Heath's Katherine O'Connor picked up the bronze medal in the British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) championship at Notts Golf Club, Hollinwell.

The plus one-handicapper, representing the University of Wales Newport, carded scores of 76, 76, 74 for her three rounds to finish on 226, one-over-par on the long Nottinghamshire course.

O’Connor finished nine shots behind winner, Jane Turner, from Robert Gordon University in Scotland, who shattered the course record with a 69 on the first day.

Frilford Heath’s Jane Binning followed up her victory in the Oxfordshire ladies’ championship by finishing joint sixth in the Hampshire Rose at North Hants.

Binning carded two rounds of 77 to finish nine shots behind the winner, England international Charlotte Ellis (Minchinhampton).

Oxford Ladies’ Judy McCairns lost out to the eventual winner in the Division B semi-finals of the English Senior Women’s Championship at Huntstanton, Norfolk.

McCairns was pipped by one hole in her her last four clash with Nickie Clarke (Royal Norwich).

She had finished joint-third in the qualifiers before beating Lynn Griffiths (Reading) 5 & 4 and Pat Bennett (Reading) at the first extra hole.

There was a first at the Burford Pro-Am where the winning amateur was a woman.

Moor Park duo Lawrence Farmer, who plays on the European Seniors Tour and Verity Scott finished first with a nett total of 136.

Frilford Heath pro Tom Fleming and amateur Robert Mann were second on 140, with Chipping Norton’s Neil Rowlands and Mark Stanton fifth on countback with 145.

Ashley Cawte produced an excellent final round to win Kirtlington’s Masters event.

The 11-handicapper trailed Nolan Aselford by three shots after his eight-under-par first round.

But Cawte came through strongly on day two to beat Asleford by three shots, finishing on nett 132, with Michael Vincent third on 136.

Matthew Arnold School will represent Oxfordshire on the national stage after being crowned county champions.

Michael Younie, Dan Croad and Jake Dines secured the spoils for the Cumnor-based school with a 106-point total at Hadden Hill.

They will now play in the national schools finals at Thetford, Norfolk from July 7-8.

Dine’s score of 35 included an eagle at the par-five 18th hole as Matthew Arnold won by six points.

“It was a great achievement as it was only the second year that the school has entered and we had one of the youngest teams in the competition,” said teacher Kevin Brown.

The trio will be sponsored by Hinksey Heights and coached by the club’s head pro Dean Davis as they prepare for the finals.

Tadmarton Heath ended The Oxfordshire’s unbeaten record in Section 1 of the Shaw Gibbs Oxfordshire Foursomes League.
