Chris Taylor’s touchdown proved decisive as Oxford Saints got their season off to a winning start with a 6-0 victory over South Wales Warriors at Llanharan RFC.
Taylor and Phil Gouldie took Saints to the Warriors three-yard line in the third quarter.
Taylor then exploded over and bulldozed his way into the end zone.
Saints’ attempt to add the extra point was blocked, but with their defence standing firm, they held on to triumph in front of a partisan crowd.
Taylor almost struck again with a 47-yard burst only to be denied by a last-ditch tackle.
Warriors’ best chance came in the fourth quarter after a bizarre period of flag throwing from the referees saw the Warriors marched 45 yards upfield.
Tranter Martin then took Warriors to the Saints’ five-yard line, but with the Warriors opting to go for a touchdown rather than an easy field goal attempt, Oxford’s star man, Scott Tolley, leapt into the air to snatch the ball away from his bigger opponent and preserve his side’s lead.
