Manager Stuart Peace has a tough dilemma as Didcot Town travel to Windsor & Eton for Tuesday night’s British Gas Business Southern League Division 1 South & West play-off semi-final – who to play in goal.
On Saturday, with their play-off place assured, Peace gave keeper Matt Trott his debut against champions Truro, with Michael Watkins being rested.
And the Australian-born stopper played a blinder against the Cornishmen, saving a penalty as they stormed to a 4-2 win, despite having striker Michael Bartley sent off in the first half for an off-the-ball incident involving Martin Watts.
“Trott was first-class,” said Peace, whose side would play AFC Totton or Beaconsfield SYCOB in Saturday’s final should they win in Berkshire.
“As well as the penalty, he made some other good saves. His distribution and handling were decent.
“We knew he was a good goalie because we had a DVD of him. He played in the Australian A-League and was also part of the Australian Olympic football squad.
“With our other keeper Tom Buckner injured, we needed to give him 90 minutes, so that we could play him if we needed.
“It’s very difficult for me – do I stick with Michael who has been my No 1 keeper all season or stick with Matt?”
Didcot are without Martin Brown (fractured eye socket) and Ian Sampson (knee), though Chris Harper could return after a groin injury. Matty Jack has returned to Didcot from Hungerford.
Peace added: “Saturday’s win was a real shot in the arm for us – we were superb throughout. If I was Windsor I would be concerned.”
