Abingdon captain Ronnie Booth revealed how a training session with Steve Hill helped them win the Oxfordshire Shield.
The club had asked Oxford University’s director of rugby if they could have a look around Iffley Road last week to prepare for the match with Blue Boar.
Hill agreed and also put the players through their paces at the ground last Thursday.
And with Boar’s talented backs, it was forward-orientated rugby that clinched it for Abingdon.
“We had a game plan and stuck to it,” said Booth “Their backs were breath-taking when they got going.
“We knew we had to restrict their ten-12 channel and stick it up our jumpers.
“We managed to do that and get the result that many people didn’t think we would.”
Booth added: “I had a massive headache the next morning, but that was fine.
“It was outstanding, an amazing day for the club.
“Just to be there was good enough for us.”
Abingdon’s battling win came in the last game in charge for coach James Kenworthy.
“It was something that we wanted to do for him,” said Booth.
“He deserved something like that.”
Blue Boar secretary Brian Kentish said: “We should have won the game. However, they deserved to win.
“Our backs dropped the ball too often.”
