City of Oxford’s Ben Chapman Lucy Smith, and Sam van de Schootbrugge all achieved national qualifying times (NQT) in the Crawley Spring Open Meet.

Chapman finished third in an exhilarating 14/15 age group 400m freestyle, the top three swimmers being separated by just 0.6secs.

He recorded a personal best of 4.18.84.

Later, he achieved an outstanding time of 16.52.34 in the 1500m freestyle, 20 seconds inside the NQT.

Smith, 12, recorded an excellent time of .17.75 secs, in the 200m freestyle, coming fifth in the dual 12/13 year old age band, third in her own age group. Van de Schootbrugge, 16, won the 16 & over 100m freestyle in 53.81 and the 1500m in 16.42.60.

Both were NQTs, as was his 800m split of 8.50.33 in the longer race.

He also set county records in the 1500m and 800m (junior and senior) and the 100m (junior) freestyle events as well as in the 50m butterfly (junior). Leanne Brooks, 14, swam an excellent 1500m freestyle, only four seconds off the 15-year-old NQT, while Hannah Vine was close to national times on several of her events
