Whatever happens now, Chinnor have proved themselves worthy of National League rugby.
That is the view of coach Jason Bowers as his side nervously await the outcome of Lydney’s final two matches in National 3 South.
The Gloucestershire club need two points from homeclashes with Ealing and Canterbury to be sure of overtaking Chinnor and sending them down.
Chinnor can at least draw comfort from the fact that Lydney’s opponents are two of the division’s top teams.
Bowers said: “It has been a great season. We have shown that we are a National 3 side.
“Even if we are relegated, we will come back again like last time.
“We have not beaten some of the sides we should have been expected to beat.
“But we have competed against some good teams and shown we are a side to be reckoned with.
“As a coaching team and players, we are looking forward to next season already.”
Chinnor at least ended their campaign on something of a high note by becoming the first side to score five tries against champions London Scottish in a 59-29 defeat.
This gave them a bonus point and the slimmest of lifelines.
Bowers said: “The day started with a tough challenge, facing a team who hadn’t lost.
“We talked long and hard about what was our best approach.
“To get within seven points was a chance, as was scoring four tries.
“At half-time and losing 35-5, the only option available was to play some rugby.”
Bob Baker has been named in the England Under 20 squad for June’s IRB Junior World Championship in Japan.
The 19-year-old Wasps and Chinnor prop is in a 26-man party for the tournament.
England, who are second seeds, prepare with a warm-up game against Loughborough University on May 13.
This is part of a week-long training camp in the Midlands, before departing for Japan on May 27.
