Chris Wilder says his heroic Oxford United players will not be distracted from their mission of trying to reach 80 points – even though their play-off hopes were severely jolted by other results on Monday.

The U’s continued their amazing away runwith a 2-0 triumph at Woking in front of an astonishing 2,100 travelling fans, but both they and their fans felt a bit deflated afterwards because main rivals Kidderminster and Stevenage also won.

“We’ve come off after a good win, but it feels a bit like a defeat after seeing the other results,” said captain Adam Murray.

Kidderminster’s 2-1 victory over table-toppers Burton leaves Oxford’s chances of finishing in the top five slim, but while there is still a chance, Wilder says his team will keep going for it.

“We’ve got to try to get 80 points, so we go to Burton on Friday night with that as the aim.

“They haven’t secured promotion yet, so they’ve got something to play for, and we’ve got something to play for, so it sets it up for a cracking match.”

Woking’s Kingfield Stadium couldn’t cope with the vast numbers of Oxford fans, and kick-off had to be delayed for an hour because the safety officer, and referee, were not happy with the hundreds of visiting supporters packed up against the front of the away terrace, in front of the crush barriers.

It needed both Wilder and United chairman Kelvin Thomas to walk over the pitch towards them to get the message across that the game would not start until the crowd were in place.

Around 250 U’s followers had to be moved into the home fans’ area after police arrived to help with segregation.

Wilder admitted the lack of organisation was “not very good”, while Thomas said he didn’t feel it was up to him to go and sort out crowd control that should have been down to the home club.

Wilder had nothing but praise, though, for his players as they made it a remarkable five wins and four draws from their nine away games in 2009.

“I’ve got nothing but credit for my players again – they’ve done a solid, professional job,” he said.

“It was nothing spectacular, not like we’ve been before when we’ve gone right after teams.

“We got ourselves in front, we were comfortable. They had a bit of the ball in and around the halfway line, but they never made us pay.

“We could easily have said we want to play and get forward, do this and do that, but the bottom line today was get the result that we wanted and we’ve done that.”

After waiting an hour for the game to kick off, United had a flying start with Adam Murray firing them in front from a fifth-minute free-kick and Simon Clist adding a second on 18 minutes with a classy volley.

“It was a great free-kick by Muzzer, and I’m delighted for Clisty again,” Wilder added.

The players were on and off the pitch so many times with kick-off constantly being put back.

“Mickey (Lewis) has done 35 warm-ups today,” Wilder laughed.

Centre back Chris Willmott was on and off more often because of an upset stomach, but managed to play the whole game.
