Robert Evans’s unbeaten record and quest for trophies continues after the opening round of this year’s ABA Senior Championships, staged at Adams Park, home to Wycombe Wanderers FC.
After claiming successive national Novice titles in subsequent seasons, the Banbury boxer rose to the occasion by stepping up in class to capture the Home Counties cruiserweight title at the first attempt.
Evans, 21, recorded his 14th consecutive victory and claimed the prized scalp of former England junior international Sonny Jury in the process.
Although he made full use of his extra height and reach from the bell, this clash never really came to life until the final round.
Evans had the better of the exchanges between the pair and landed the more powerful and decisive shots to gain a unanimous decision from the judges.
He will be joined in the next stage of the competition – where the Home Counties take on their counterparts from the East of England – by Oxford Boxing Academy’s Lawrence Lewis who was unchallenged at bantamweight.
But there was disappointment for Blackbird Leys welterweight Jack Hill in his senior championship baptism with Stevenage fighter Justin Perry. The Cowley teenager acquitted himself well against a more experienced opponent and there was little to separate the pair at the end of the second round.
But Perry moved up a gear in the final session to claim the decision.
In the supporting contests, Thame’s Martin Carr had a dream debut as he halted Jake Henderson from the host Marlow gym inside a round.
An unanswered eight-punch cluster prompted a standing count and Henderson was deemed too dazed by referee Jack Wilson to continue.
