Oxford United manager Chris Wilder said Saturday's dramatic 2-1 comeback win over promotion rivals Histon capped “a marvellous week for the football club”.
After being presented with the Manager of the Month award for March, Wilder saw star striker James Constable mark his new three-year contract agreement by smashing his fourth double in four weeks to earn three precious points in United's chase for a play-off place.
And U's supporters are on a high, realising just how good the times could be between now and 2012, after witnessing what an instinctive natural finisher the 24-year-old is.
Two half-chances in the box in the second half . . . two goals, making it 24 for the season.
“He's in a rich vein of form and he wants to play for this club,” Wilder said. “It's fantastic for us.
“It capped a marvellous week for the football club, with the boy getting both goals.”
Constable said: “It was just nice to be in the right place at the right time.
“The second one was a bit of luck really, I just swung at it and it was in the back of the net.
“To get a win like that was a great feeling.
“Histon away was probably the lowest we've been so it was nice to have such a high from beating the same opponents.”
And the former Kidderminster and Shrewsbury striker enjoyed being back out on the pitch doing what he does best after an unsettling few days negotiating about his future.
“It was nice to get back playing football,” he admitted.
“It was a difficult week with a few things going on, and it's just nice to get it sorted.”
The win keeps Oxford hard on the heels of Kidderminster and Stevenage, and dealt a blow to Histon's promotion charge.
But United, whose players could easily have dropped their heads when Histon went in front from a goal many thought was offside, now have to keep the screw turned in their next game at York tomorrow.
“We had it in the back of our minds after hitting the post twice that it might not be our day,” Constable said.
“I don't think the referee helped with that, but then he did help us a massive amount with the sending-off – I don't think it was a sending-off, they were a bit unlucky with that.
“After that it was still difficult, but we kept getting the ball in there and luckily got the three points.
“It was a massive three points and we just look forward to Tuesday now.”
