Bracknell Tn 1 (Thomas 61)
Abingdon Utd 0
Abingdon United produced a lacklustre display as they slipped to their third successive defeat in Division 1 South & West against relegation candidates Bracknell.
The home side kicked off down the slope with the wind at their backs, but Abingdon’s defence dealt well with the aerial threat.
Abingdon’s first real effort on goal came after the half-hour when Billy Beechers drove his shot from fully 35 yards well off target.
Abingdon pressure then created panic in the home defence, and the ball ran to Beechers, whose goal-bound shot hit a defender’s leg, and with the pace taken off the ball, keeper Max Aneke scrambled across goal and pushed it around a post.
With half-time approaching, Bracknell’s James Bayliffe fired a shot just wide, before Ian Harvey was caught in two minds as he stabbed a chance wide.
On the hour, Abingdon keeper Sam Warrell had to be alert to tip over Adam Kennedy’s free kick. But a minute later, Bracknell grabbed the decisive goal when Dean Thomas raced through, before slipping the ball past Warrell as he rushed out and it went in off a post.
Abingdon manager Andy Slater then made a triple change with Luke Holden, Micheas Herbert and Ben Weedon coming on.
United had a good chance when Weedon’s corner was headed on by Herbert, but Julian McCalmon volleyed over.
Abingdon were then indebted to a Warrell’s diving save to tip a Thomas header as Bracknell almost added a second.
