Oxford Harlequins 62, Chipping Norton 15

Superior pace and precision won the day as Oxford Harlequins reached the Oxfordshire Cup final with a ten-try demolition job.

Right wing Andy Noyce ran in a hat-trick, with left wing Ollie Campbell and full back Nick Sevier adding braces as Quins cut loose.

Up front, No 8 Adam Pearson bagged the opening try, and was a real force in the loose and at the line-out.

Chippy, who are two leagues below Quins, scored three tries of their own, but just could not produce the level of defence the hosts would normally find in South West 1.

The visitors competed fairly well up front, but their scrum took time to find its feet.

Quins disrupted the first set-piece Chippy had in the second minute and visiting No 8 Jon Hickman was forced to chase a bouncing ball towards his own try line.

Hickman could not secure possession, and Pearson, who had chased well, pounced for the opening try.

Chippy had a few minutes to settle their nerves before South African centre Shaunn Lombard came marauding through their midfield and fed the supporting Noyce to score.

Fly half Mark Forth converted, and at 12-0 after eight minutes, things looked bleak for Chippy.

A crafty grubber kick from fly half Adam Smith forced Quins to concede a penalty on 18 minutes.

From the resulting line-out, hooker Ian Waldron set up a try for Chippy skipper Hickman.

Four minutes later, Campbell crossed for his first after an excellent flat pass from Sevier.

Almost immediately it was 17-10 after some fine recycling ended with a try for Chippy lock Brin Walker.

Quins, however, maintained their expansive game and struck again when Forth dummied his way through for score a fine solo try on 30 minutes.

Three tries in the final five minutes of the half ended any doubts as to the match’s outcome.

Noyce completed his hat-trick with two rapid tries – the first a simple finish and the second a fine run after good work from Pearson.

Forth converted these two, while replacement prop Matt Edney piled over for his first Quins try in stoppage time.

The second half was not quite as frenetic, and it took Quins nine minutes to run in try No 8.

Sevier sprinted in to finish after Forth’s inside ball and the latter converted.

Chippy flanker Matt Dawson burst down the blindside to bag their third try on 55 minutes, and you couldn’t fault his side’s effort.

Campbell showed the alertness that has served Quins so well this season with an interception try, which Forth converted, on 64 minutes.

Chippy conceded a string of penalties in the final quarter of an hour, but still defended with spirit.

Quins probably took their foot off the gas, but still managed one more try on 79 minutes when Forth found the scorer Sevier with a looped pass and the fly half converted.
