The Leadbitter Oxford Academy have appointed two new members of staff as they celebrate their first anniversary.

Clive Davies has joined as manager and Ken Graydon is the new administrator.

Both will assist director John Brodley at the academy based at Oxford RFC’s Southern Bypass Ground.

Davies, a former Coventry player and coach, was recently in charge of the now defunct Chinnor Academy, while Graydon played for Bristol and Bristol Harlequins.

“It is a sign of progress that seasoned coaches have been attracted to Oxford to help develop the Academy and create an environment which will nurture the county’s future rugby stars,” said Bob Rendell, Leadbitter Group chief executive and former Oxford Marathon colt.

According to Brodley, they have already made progress in stemming the flow of talented young players leaving the area.

“The academy has filled a vacuum by providing a structure to support 16 to 19 year olds through to the senior levels,” said Brodley.

“Our intention is to continue to evolve the academy to become the best run outside the professional game.”

“The Academy is exactly what the county needs,” added Davies.

“I’m confident that we have all the makings of a great squad that will contribute to the success of Oxford rugby.”

Graydon added: “I am excited to be working with John Brodley and Clive Davies again and to be given the opportunity to establish a centre of excellence for youth rugby in the city.”

Among the Academy’s best prospects are 19-year-old scrum half/centre John Derrick, lock Ewan Allen, 17, and Matt Edney, 18.

Allen said: “The Academy has given me a good opportunity to play high-quality rugby with quality coaching.”
