Abingdon Utd 2 (James 51, Odhiambo 85 pen)

Didcot Tn 2 (Sampson 12, King pen 24)

Didcot Town let a two-goal lead slip as Abingdon United fought back for a share of the spoils in their Division 1 South & West derby at Northcourt Road. The Railwaymen took the lead with the first shot of the game as Ian Sampson drilled a low drive inside a post from 12 yards.

With 24 minutes gone, Michael Bartley flicked a ball into the area and Sampson was brought down as he raced on to it, with referee Alf Field immediately pointing to the spot.

Jack King gave Sam Warrell no chance as he drove the penalty kick home to double the visitors’ lead.

Abingdon upped the tempo, and on 51 minutes Anaclet Odhiambo was denied by Michael Watkins’ legs as he went one-on-one with the Didcot keeper.

However, the ball fell to Mark Janes, whose fierce shot took a wicked bounce and flew past the wrong-footed Didcot keeper.

Warrell made a good save to deny Neville Roach after the Didcot striker beat the offside trap.

Bartley blazed high over the bar before United were awarded a controversial penalty five minutes from time for handball against Andy Williams as he deflected Luke Holden’s goalbound shot wide – even though to many it looked like it came off his shoulder.

Williams was sent off, and Odhiambo sent Watkins the wrong way from the spot.

With time running out, Abingdon almost won it as Watkins palmed over Holden’s shot.
