England Under 20s’ loss may be Chinnor’s gain after Bob Baker and Arthur Ellis were not selected to face Scotland tomorrow.

The Wasps-contracted duo both featured for England in last week’s 31-11 defeat against France.

But they are now available for Saturday’s National 3 South trip to Havant.

Meanwhile, Chinnor’s assistant coach John Vaughan believes they have made real progress during their second season in the division.

Vaughan saw Chinnor finish bottom of the pile in 2007, but although they are again fighting relegation this time, it is far from doom and gloom.

“They have improved tre-mendously from two years ago,” said Vaughan.

“With a bit more luck earlier in the season, we could have been a mid-table side.

“The spirit is great and we are fighting really hard.”

Chinnor lie one place above the drop zone, after clawing their way out of the bottom two with excellent wins over Dings Crusaders and Ealing.

Vaughan said: “We had three very difficult games against Dings, Ealing and Henley, after losing three in a row.

“We were looking at maybe picking up one or two bonus points, so we are more than happy to get eight.”

Chinnor gave debuts to Wasps Academy pair, 17-year-old Christian Wade and Jack Wallace, 18, at Henley on Saturday as their resources were further stretched.

Both will be in England Under 18 action against Scotland on Sunday, so more selection difficulties may result.

Vaughan said: “We are down to the bare bones.

“We have used 43 players this season, whereas Henley have only used 31.”

Vaughan also cited the disparity in financial resources in the division and stressed Chinnor were on a sound footing despite the credit crunch.

“Ealing spend about £45,000 a month on their team. I think we probably spend that a year,” he said.

“It is a lot of money to find if a backer pulls out.”

Chinnor's Matt Woodward and Rob Hill have been named in the England Deaf squad to face Wales at Pontypridd on Saturday.
