New Banbury United manager Billy Jeffrey says it’s vital his relegation-threatened team get back to winning ways, starting with Tuesday night’s British Gas Business Southern League Premier Division home game against Stourbridge – his first match at the helm.

On Saturday, Jeffrey looked on as Banbury plunged into the drop zone with a 1-0 defeat at Mangotsfield.

“It’s a difficult situation, but I knew that when I came here,” said Jeffrey, who takes over officially on Tuesday night– Anton Sambrook, Wally Hastie and Steve Slaughter were in charge of the team at the weekend.

“We need to get some players in as quickly as possible. I’m hoping to have a new face in tomorrow, if not Saturday.

“It’s very important for us to win. The results on Saturday were not the best for us. It means it’s not totally in our hands.

“But we have to concentrate on what we do, rather than the teams around us.

“We need to get some good results. With these two home games coming up (they host Tiverton on Saturday), it’s important we relax and get two wins.

“We’ve got to try and be positive and get at them early on – it’s all we can do.”

Banbury will be without Nathan Haisley, who is suspended.

Oxford City striker James Faulkner will have to serve a five-match ban for his sending off in the home game against Hemel Hempstead in February.

Faulkner was due to serve a three-match ban for the offence, which happened within minutes of him coming on as a substitute, but the FA have added two more games for comments he made to the referee.

Player-manager Justin Merritt said: “The referee’s report said he had adopted an aggressive attitude when he was sent off, so they added two more on.”

Meanwhile, City will be without Michael Lyon (knee) and Craig Faulconbridge (ankle) when they entertain Tiverton.

They give Andy Baird a late fitness test after he pulled out of Saturday’s trip to Swindon Supermarine due to illness, though Steve Davis returns after being unavailable.

Merritt added: “We are a bit short on numbers, but we just have to get on with it.”

Abingdon United boss Andy Slater said his side need to bounce back when they travel to Thatcham in Division 1 South & West.

On Saturday, Paulton ended Abingdon’s three-match winning streak with a 2-0 success.

He said: “We looked jaded and lacked a cutting edge, so a bit more is needed.”
