North Leigh 1 (Burnell 40)

Winchester City 0

A GOAL just before half-time from Joe Burnell was enough to give North Leigh the points against basement boys Winchester in Division 1 South & West.

The visitors had keeper Clint Davies to thank, as he ensured North Leigh did not secure a more emphatic win.

Davies denied Andy McCabe in the first minute, and although Winchester could have taken the lead when Mike McEnery fired wide, the home side finished in the ascendancy.

The goal came from a corner, which was headed clear to Burnell, who hit a first-time shot from 20 yards into the top corner.

Stuart Hole could have doubled the lead from another corner, but fired just over the bar.

Davies denied Liam Hope at full-stretch, then produced the save of the game as he tipped a scorching Ben Reardon strike over the bar.

Simon Futcher’s free-kick was also well-saved by Davies, but Winchester looked dangerous on the break, with the pace of Taylor Morgan testing North Leigh’s defence.

The home side were unable to add to their lead, but solid defending from Hole and skipper Stuart Huxley ensured a quiet afternoon for Lee Farrow in the North Leigh goal.

North Leigh: Farrow, Weedon, Futcher, Hole, Huxley, Parker (Sadler 65), Burnell, Jackson (Helby 26), Hope (Collins 85), McCabe, Reardon. Sub not used): Merriman.
