Bags meeting chiefs are so concerned at the downturn in betting turnover that they have summoned racing managers from all participating tracks to attend a seminar next Thursday.

The BAGS board will be seeking the views of those who grade the races to come ideas to improve betting turnover.

Tracks have always been advised to grade tightly so that there isn't an obvious choice in the race.

Now, however, it appears that it is so hard for punters to pick a winner, they have given up trying.

I have always thought that 14 races over the same standard 450m trip doesn't whet the appetite.

At one time there used to be a varied race card including sprints, staying events and even hurdling and a marathon.

Perhaps re-introducing some variety could bring the punters back.
