Abingdon Utd 4 (Kirby og 25, Odhiambo pen 53, Austin 56, Herbert 59)

Gosport Boro 1 (Kirby 5)

Depleted Abingdon United recovered from a dreadful start to romp to a storming victory to ease their Division 1 South & West relegation worries on Saturday.

With keeper Sam Warrell and defender Tom Franklin suspended, Abingdon started with Oxford United’s on-loan keeper James Foster between the sticks and Ben Weedon back in defence.

After five minutes, their defence failed to clear from a corner and Nathan Kirby headed home for Gosport.

Abingdon started to get back into the game, but striker Anaclet Odhiambo failed to find the net from three yards out from a Luke Holden cross.

The home team’s pressure finally paid off when Kirby turned the ball into his own net from Tom Austin’s free kick.

In the second half, the hosts were awarded a penalty when Holden was pulled back in the box, the referee having consulted with his assistant before pointing to the spot.

Odhiambo slotted home to put Abingdon ahead.

Within a space of three minutes the home team scored two further goals.

Tom Austin drilled home their third before and captain Micheas Herbert sealed the visitors’ fate when he tapped home from Austin’s pin-point cross.
