Oxford University’s 27-12 victory over the Penguins International XV on Tuesday was all the more impressive when you consider the quality of opponents they faced.

Penguins fielded Wasps’ new signing, New Zealand lock Marty Veale, plus teammates, prop Charlie Beech, and No 8 Hugo Ellis, while Australian Sevens player Tim Walsh had a strong game at fly half.

Wing Tom Tombleson, making a final guest appearance, bagged Oxford’s first try, with centre Tom Gregory kicking a penalty.

Tombleson set up centre and man-of-the-match Jon Burnett for try No 2, which Gregory converted for 15-0.

Penguins hit back after the break with two tries from Veale, the latter converted by Howard Graham.

But Oxford finished strongly with replacement Willem Klopper setting up flanker Stan McKeen and Burnett bagging his second try, which Gregory converted.
