Oxford's cycle speedway club, the Horspath Hammers, are continuing their preparation for the 2009 season.

The club has seen an increase in junior riders, bucking a trend of dwindling numbers in recent seasons.

Each Sunday, more than 15 youngsters turn out for training in all weathers, all eager to improve before the season starts next month.

And they cannot afford to slack, as the club will compete in the British Youth & Junior League, the Premier League, the South West League and the Conference Under 18 League.

They will provide support for the senior riders, who will competing in both the Premier and South West Leagues thiss eason.

Hammers won the British Team Championships in 2007, so the youngsters know what they can apsire to.

Anybody under 16 interested in the sport is invited to practice sessions on Sundays (12-2pm) at Horspath Village Recreation Ground.
