OXFORD United chairman Kelvin Thomas has revealed the club have approached Sir Richard Branson in a bid to help them buy the Kassam Stadium.

And although the Kidlington tycoon said that he was unable to help at this time, he appears not to have ruled out potential future investment.

In an exclusive interview with the United chief in which the Oxford Mail put questions to him submitted by supporters, Thomas revealed that Branson had been approached by the club.

However, Thomas was unwilling to elaborate on potential future deals.

He said: “Yes, the club have spoken to Richard Branson, but he has unfortunately confirmed that he did not want to invest in a football club – at this time.”

When asked to elaborate on ‘at this time’, Thomas coyly resisted making further comment.

United’s chairman disclosed that the club still have financial difficulties, but says that they are not in ‘deep financial straights’.

And tellingly, Thomas says that the club have been helped enormously by former chairman Firoz Kassam, who is now allowing the club to pay rent monthly, rather than quarterly.

In a frank interview, Thomas reveals that manager Chris Wilder is likely to have a reduced budget for next season; explains why it never crossed his mind to dismiss secretary Mick Brown after the club’s points deduction; confirms that Woodstock Partners continue to back the club, and elaborates on the lack of a fans’ forum.
