Vale of White Horse Under 13s bowed out of the Oxford United Cup 6-5 in a sudden death penalty shoot-out against Swindon at Milton.

The tie was goalless after extra time, and both sides hit the target with three of their five penalties – James Clarke, Oliver Thomas and Jack Hamblin scoring for Vale.

Both sides were successful with their next two spot-kicks, Joe Wilkinson and George Thatcher netting for Vale.

But Vale missed their eighth penalty, and although keeper Hayden Jones got both hands to Swindon’s next spot-kick, it looped over his head and just under the bar to send Vale out.

In normal time, Connor Powell was denied three times by the Swindon keeper, but the Vale defence also had some lucky escapes.

l KAI Barrett’s second-half brace failed to save Vale of White Horse Under 11s from a 4-2 defeat at Luton in the County League.

The match took place on a squelchy surface, which was barely playable, and Vale held out until the 15th minute when Luton took the lead.

Three more goals followed before half-time to effectively seal Vale’s fate.

Meanwhile, King Alfred’s Community & Sports College’s ESFA Match! Under 12 Schools Cup quarter-final against Ridgeway School, Plymouth, is at Wantage Town or Letcombe next Monday (2.30pm).
