Banbury Cross’s Mark Sykes set the record straight to be crowned the English Indoor Association's Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire area singles champion for the first time.
Twelve months ago, he suffered an agonising defeat in the final, going down 21-18 to Carterton’s Andy Wise after holding a commanding 18-6 lead.
But this time he made no mistake, beating Chipping Norton’s Martin Shepherd 21-13 in Saturday’s final at Oxford & District.
Now Sykes will represent Oxon and Bucks in the national finals at Nottingham from April 2-5.
In the meantime, the Banbury Cross ace will chase more glory in the area finals this weekend.
He teams up with Keith Holloway to take on Clive Houndslow and David Harding (Foxhill, Aylesbury) in the pairs final at Oxford City & County on Saturday (10am).
And then on Monday, Sykes and Holloway are joined by Alan Docherty for the triples final, also at City & County.
Their opponents will be Carterton’s Andy McIntyre, Tim Jupp and Stuart Richens.
McIntyre is also part of the Carterton side – together with Jim Hicks, George Weedon and Chris Weedon – who take on Oxford & District’s Eddie Pilgrim, Paul Comley, Howard Watts and Chris Allen in the fours final at City & County on Saturday (10am).
Meanwhile, Allen and his son Glenn reached the national Father and Son Championship quarter-finals at Northampton before bowing out 26-19 to Lincoln’s Derek and Paul Johnson.
They had opened up by beating Hartlepool’s Alan and Paul Hartley 21-16, before defeating Hornsea’s Scott Burrell and Richard Kemp 25-20 in round two.
