Banbury United bounced back from Saturday’s 6-0 drubbing against Evesham United to win 2-1 at home to Rugby in the BGB Southern League Premier Division last night.
Scott Bridges struck a last-minute winner to lift Banbury out of the drop zone, while Joe Murrell saved a 78th-minute penalty from Rugby’s Liam Nicell.
Murrell saved well from Neil King before Banbury took the lead on 12 minutes when Nicky Gordon crossed for Lewis Travers to head in.
Howard Forinton headed a 21st-minute free kick against the bar, while Luke Bennett cleared off the Banbury line five minutes before the break.
Rugby’s increased second-half pressure saw them equalise through Matt Gearing on 63 minutes.
Murrell tipped over from Scott Musgrove, then produced his penalty magic before Bridges fired home from 16 yards after a corner was cleared to him.
Oxford City produced a disappointing display and had Andy Ballard sent-off in a 2-2 draw at Mangotsfield United.
City trailed after seven minutes when Scott Hendy headed in a free kick.
But they equalised eight minutes later when Andy Baird’s free kick wasn’t cleared and Andy Gunn drove in.
Dave Savage set up Craig Faulconbridge for City’s second on 28 minutes, but they couldn’t build on this.
Slack defending allowed James Fitzpatrick to equalise on 63 minutes, while Ballard received a second yellow card 12 minutes later.
A late strike from Anaclet Odhiambo was not enough as Abingdon United lost 2-1 at home to Burnham in Division 1 South & West.
Odhiambo netted from Micheas Herbert’s flick on 75 minutes and was later denied a penalty, but first-half strikes from Ben Huddell and Leon Yarnie had done the damage.
A blown floodlight bulb in the 38th-minute led to a 20-minute delay in play.
Abingdon needed a goal-line clearance from James Organ to keep them in the game after the break.
Jordan Parker scored twice as holders North Leigh cruised into the Oxfordshire Senior Cup semi-finals with a 6-0 demolition of Clanfield.
It was 0-0 at the break, but North Leigh then took charge with Chris Allen (pen), Mark Simms, Liam Hope and Stuart Hole also netting.
