Didcot rally driver Jonathan Sargeant braved the snow and ice at the Wyedean Forest Rally in Chepstow, South Wales – the first round of the British Trials and Rally Drivers Association Championships.
Starting early in the morning, the tracks in the Forest of Dean were sheet ice, bordered by big snow banks due to snow-ploughing before the race.
Despite this, things went well for Sargeant and co-driver Rob Price, who pushed themselves to the limit.
“It was hard work in the opening stages,” said Sargeant. “It was tempting to go flat-out, but the hairpins were causing lots of crashes.”
The duo looked in good shape until the last stage of the afternoon session, when they too fell victim to the conditions and span off.
“We got carried away close to the finish and lost control down a long and fast straight,” Sargeant said.
“Rob was fighting with the car, and we were lucky not to have a big crash into the trees.”
Pushed back onto the road by spectators, the duo reached the end of the race, and crossed the line to earn 20 championship points.
The next race will be in Cumbria on March 7.
