Last week’s snow and freezing conditions put paid to most fishing at the weekend.
Water temperatures plummeted and most stillwaters froze over, but the weather appears to be getting warmer, although it will take a bit of time to get all that snow water through our systems.
With only a few weeks left of the coarse season on rivers, it would be nice to be able to spend some time fishing them before the 12-week close season.
Meanwhile, the secret Oxfordshire stillwater producing some super-sized roach, continues to turn up trumps.
Tom Collingridge, who travels all the way up the M5 from Cullumpton in Devon, had an amazing catch on his last visit just before the cold snap.
He had no fewer than 12 redfins over 2lb, the best going 3.1.0.
He began by putting in some balls of groundbait mixed with hemp and then fished a maggot feeder.
The business end of his rig was a size 16 Drennan Specimen hook tied to 4lb 12oz Reflo Powerline. Bait was double maggot flavoured with turmeric.
On his first day he landed roach weighing 3.1.0 and 2.14.0, followed by fish from 2.4.0 to 2.12.0 the next day.
I’d like to tell you the name of the fishery, but I’ve been sworn to secrecy.
North Oxford AS hold their AGM at the Plough Inn, Wolvercote, on Tuesday starting at 8pm. All card-holding members welcome.
