OXFORDSHIRE’S weekend sporting action is likely to be completely wiped out.

The heavy snow has forced almost every fixture to be called off – and at time of going to print last night, there were only around half a dozen fixtures that were still hopeful of taking place.

Oxford United’s Blue Square Premier match at Kettering was one of the first to go, called off early yesterday morning after snow at the A-Line Arena – five or six inches deep on Thursday – got worse.

The game has been rescheduled for Tuesday night, but with more snow expected early next week, it is already looking doubtful.

Supporters who have already bought tickets can use these on Tuesday night, but if any fans are unable to attend, they have until Saturday, February 14 to claim their refund from United’s ticket office.

Oxford City’s Southern League game at home to Bracknell was another to be called off – with all games on council pitches going the same way.

Banbury’s trip to Bedford was postponed at 4pm yesterday, with the Division 1 South & West games involving Didcot and North Leigh already off.

One game that will wait until this morning, however, was Abingdon United’s trip to Thatcham – although that has little chance of surviving.

The only Hellenic League match not called off by last night was Headington Amateurs’ trip to Reading Town.

Local leagues have already been virtually wiped out.

All of the Oxford Mail Boys League, Oxford Mail Girls League and Witney Youth matches have been cancelled.

The Witney & District FA and North Berks League have called off today’s entire programme, but matches in the Oxfordshire Senior League, Banbury District & Lord Jersey FA and Oxford City FA will wait for clubs to make a decision.

Almost all, however, are likely to bite the dust.

The Sunday games in the Autotype UTV League and Marston’s Oxford League are likely to go the same way.

Rugby has been completely wiped out, the Oxfordshire Shield games at Harwell and Littlemore, as well as Sunday’s Oxfordshire Cup match at Wallingford all falling to the weather.

Hockey provides the county with its only realistic hope of matches – any teams agreeing to help shift the snow from on top of the all-weather pitches have a chance of playing.

Yesterday’s greyhound racing was called off, and an inspection to see if racing tonight is possible takes place at 11am this morning.

Oxford City Stars’ ice hockey match at Milton Keynes – unsurprisingly – looks like being one of the only sporting fixtures to beat the weather.
