Berinsfield’S Jordan Flynn made it through to the last eight of this year’s National Schools Championships after a stunning victory over London champion Markamal Singh in front of his own supporters.

He imposed his authority from the start of this Class 1 42 kg encounter by getting behind the jab and controlling the ring.

Showing more variety in his shots as the bout progressed, he underlined his superiority by imposing a standing count after connecting with an unanswered six-punch cluster in the final session.

Christy McDonagh – also from the organising club – made a valiant bid to join Flynn in the last eight of the competition during an absorbing Class 3 63 kg encounter with Dale Youth’s Andrew Smith where the pair never relaxed from bell to bell.

After the toe-to-toe finale, it was Smith that had his arm raised, but he had been tested every step of the way in the bout of the day.

And there was also disappointment for Oxford Boxing Academy’s Bradley Townsend in his Class 2 46 kg clash with Newham’s Desmond Johnson.

Although the Oxfordshire teenager landed the more eye-catching punches, a busy middle period from his London rival tilted the balance in his favour.

There were 21 bouts contested during the five-hour Saturday afternoon marathon at Berinsfield’s Fane Drive HQ.

Flynn now travels to Grays in Essex for the quarter finals on Sunday, February 8.
