Abingdon United extended their unbeaten Youth Conference League run to five matches after a 3-2 victory at Hitchin.
Despite being without three regulars through injury, Abingdon went ahead on 20 minutes.
Good defensive work from Rob Johnson and Matty Midwinter freed Lewis Brown, who slid a ball in behind the defence for Callum Mackinnon to give chase – and he lashed home from 20 yards off the underside of the bar.
However, Abingdon took their foot off the gas and were made to pay when Hitchin equalised in the 31st-minute.
Abingdon started the second half well, and regained the lead when Pablo Haysham’s free-kick found the head of Luke Carnell, who nodded home.
Haysham was then fouled in the area and Tom Conway calmly converted the spot-kick.
A dubious penalty at the other end – given by the linesman – saw Hitchin reduce the deficit, but Abingdon held on.
Abingdon Utd: Dalton, R Johnson, Midwinter, Carnell, Cadle (Veal 45), Conway, Brown, Saunders, Haysham, Hartigan (Felix 89), Mackinnon (Bauer 75).
