Oxfordshire 2nd gave unbeaten Berkshire 2nd a fright before falling to a 9-6 defeat in Division 3B of the Inter-County Champion-ship at Woodley.
Oxon shared the singles 2-2 thanks to wins from Kathryn Schutterlin and Natalie Ng and also halved the eight men’s and women’s doubles.
Then at 6-6 the mixed arrived and with it went all the visitors’ chances.
They suffered narrow losses at both first and third mixed – the first losing 23-21, 21-19 and third by 23-21 in the third end.
Oxon 3rd put up an excellent fight before losing to Worcestershire 4th in Division 5D at Eynsham.
The hosts halved the four singles thanks to Pete Brow-ning, who won 21-12, 22-20, and Katy Shuttle-worth.
The mixed also went well, the second pair of Will Green and Nicola Casey winning 21-11, 21-15 and the first pair Jon Ponsford and Anna Waring triumphing 21-17, 21-17.
A bold display from Green and Ponsford gave Oxon their only two wins in the men’s and women’s doubles.
Two men’s matches were lost 22-20 and 21-19 in the third, while the women’s pairing of Alison Riches and Anna Waring lost after holding match point.
l Henry Mo and Jenny Killingbeck won all six matches, but could not stop Leys A losing 6-3 to Evenlode A and 5-4 to Headington B in Mixed Division 2 of the Oxford & District League.
Martyn Webster and Chris Betterton helped Leys C edged Headington C 5-4 in Men’s Division 5.
