Woodstock Harrier Steven Frear was crowned senior men’s champion at the 2009 Oxfordshire Cross Country Championships at Horspath.

Frear produced a powerful display over the 9.4-kilometre course.

With course conditions heavy under-foot after a thaw from the two-week freeze, quick times were, perhaps, unexpected.

But Frear’s exceptional display eclipsed the field, as he consistently put in sub six-minute miles across the undulating course.

Such was Frear’s dominance, he left Oxford Mail Cross Country League leader Steve Kimber (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow) trailing almost a minute behind in third place, although his time of 30.48 was more than respectable.

Sandwiched between Frear and Kimber was Owain Bristow, running for first-claim club Edinburgh, who clocked 30.06 to finish as runner-up.

Abingdon Ambler Paul Fernandez was fourth home in 30.51.

With Frear’s magnificent performance, it helped Woodstock to the county team title.

The vet 40 crown went to Headington’s consistent performer Vasili Zverev.

He clocked 32.02 to see off the challenge of clubmate Mark Richards, who finished 27 seconds adrift.

With Jim Thorn and Andy Phelps also in the top ten in this category, Headington’s veterans won team gold.

Woodstock Harrier Bryan Vaughan lifted the vet 50 men’s title, and he did so with plenty to spare.

His time of 34.46 was almost a minute ahead of Headington’s John Griffiths, with Oxford City’s Stewart Thorp a further 15 seconds back in third.

Michael Worthington won the vet 60 crown, clocking 38.39.

In the junior events, Tim Traynor cruised to victory in the under 20 men’s category.

His time of 30.22 was a massive four minutes ahead of his nearest rival, Stuart Miller (Radley).

Jacob Simmons (Banbury Harriers) won the under 17 boys’ race, clocking 19.45, with Radley trio Stuart Ferguson, Phillipe Essink and George Miller occupying the next three positions.

Oxford City’s Harry Robertson led the way in the under 15 boys’ race, clocking 17.48, with Alastair Duff and Jack Humphreys (both Radley) taking silver and bronze respectively.

The under 13 boys’ category was won by Thomas Beigal (Banbury Harriers), with Thomas Jaunet-Green (Great Milton Primary School) winning the under 11 boys’ race.
