The third round of this season’s Winter League series saw 51 anglers out on the Thames at Radley where the river proved both moody and difficult due to the cold snap leading up to the match.

On the day, it rose a good eight inches and coloured up, leaving some anglers strugg-ling for a bite.

Robin Cave (Fox Match Isis) fished a groundbait feeder with double dendra on the hook tight across and caught seven bream for a match-winning 34.2.0.

Also getting among the slabs was Jason Gunn (Sensas A4), who weighed in 13.5.0 on feeder with worm.

Pegged up from the boathouse, Jason’s teammate Chris Ives (Sensas A4) landed two bream on feeder and maggot/worm cocktail for a third-placed 9.1.0.

Beehive AC fished for the Harry Strong Shield at a slow Panshill, the previous week’s frosts having taken their toll, and the 15 members found it hard work.

Winning his second match on the trot, Kevin Jeacock put 48.12.0 on the scales, fishing the pole and maggot hard against the far bank.

Steve Dingle was second with 19.10.0, alternating between pellet and maggot, followed by Mick Merry with 15.12.0 on maggot.

Dorchester fished their third inter-league match on the top lake at the Glebe, near Bicester, where the seven anglers present found the lake unaffected by the heavy rain.

Fishing the pole at 12 metres with punch, Lol Budd weighed in 46.8.0 of carp to win, while John Wheeler had four carp on maggot worth a second-placed 14.10.0.

In third place with 8.0.0 was Ted Budziszewski, who fished the pole and tried everything including maggot, worm, bread and corn to tempt two carp, plus some bits.

There was a very good turn-out of 17 for Yarnton’s match at Lower Court, which had some colour to it.

Despite the cold snap, Richard Strange (RS Baits) triumphed with 30.3.0 on pole and pellet to the island.

Andy Wiffin fished pole with meat for 24.5.0 and second place, followed by Scott Miller (Predator) with 23.4.0, switching between pole and lead and alternating between meat and paste.

Due to the heavy rain on Saturday, the Oxford Bus AC match was switched from the usual school waters to a nearby backwater, which normally fishes well when the Cherwell is running high.

Pete Clarke used a 22 hook on pole with either single maggot or caster to catch several bream, roach and perch for a winning 17.1.0.

Tony Prescott was second with 5.5.0, a brace of perch around 2lb, on worm, and Anthony Tompkins had 4.11.0 of roach and perch for third.

The Thames at Fairmile was rising and coloured with a lot of rubbish coming down for the Jolly Anglers match, fished by nine anglers.

Dave Mitchell came in first with 16.10.0, comprising three bream and a chub on maggot feeder and caster or maggot.

Phil Ansell had a bream, skimmer and chublets on groundbait feeder with maggot for a second-placed 10.6.0, while Warren Cave used the same method to catch a bream and some chublets worth 7.10.0.

Kidlington AS were on the Oxford Canal at the Rock of Gibraltar for their Paul Jackman Cup, and the nine anglers found the canal in a filthy state.

The top three all came from the marina section. Paul Jackman triumphed with a net of roach and skimmers weighing 14.4.0 on pole with worm over groundbait.

Dave Britnell finished second with 12.0.0 of skimmers on maggot, and third with 11.12.0 was Terry Lester, who fished worm.
