Witney coach John Campbell was in a far better mood than seven days previously after their victory over Grove.

He said: “I’m delighted. We played a lot better than last week.

“I thought the forwards were superb and won a lot of good ball.

“We’ve got five first-team backs out and it shows we must be doing something right to win games like that.

“Grove were far better than Aylesbury last week, but we ‘manned up’ against them.

“I thought the ref was average for both sides.

“He didn’t pick up the off-sides in the centres and was harsh on the cards.

“I think we were ten points better than them and deserved another try.

“I was also happy that John Smart wasn’t playing for them as he is a top player.”

Grove manager Paul Maryon said: “I think we were slightly unlucky.

“The boys played a lot better than they have done for a while.

“Refereeing decisions went against us.

“We had three sin-binned in the first half, but similar situations weren’t punished the same way in the second half.

“We were doing well in their scrums, but in our own we were going to sleep a little.

“We should have played to the conditions a bit more.

“That’s the first time that line-out move has worked. We’ve spent a lot of time on it in training.

“I was proud of the boys today.

“They are more annoyed than we are because we played enough rugby to win, but didn’t execute enough.

“Unfortunately we have got a habit of letting teams off the hook.”
