Greene King Oxford & District League finals night at a packed Rover Sports & Social Club produced seven first-time winners out of the ten competitions.

Three Pigeons' Neil Lyons, who featured in four finals, defeated Kevin Baker (Cricketers) 2-1 in the top singles final.

Baker took the first leg on three sticks, with Lyons levelling in the second. Lyons then set four in the final leg, which proved enough to give him his first singles title.

Lyons then partnered his son Ben in the Parent & Child final against Andy and Craig Beal.

The Beals won the opening leg 7-5, with the Lyons winning the next 8-7. Lyons then set four in the deciding leg and with Andy Beal hitting a four in reply, it was left to his son to whip off the one doll needed to give them their first victory in this competition.

The Jim Whitbread Trophy between Cricketers Arms (Littleworth) and Red Lion (Islip) was a marathon.

Nothing could separate them in the opening leg as they drew 17-17 on six sticks, then 8-8 on three sticks and 1-1 on one stick. Cricketers finally took the leg back on six sticks 16-15.

Red Lion then set 20 in the second leg and with Cricketers getting off to a slow start, they left anchor man Nigel Bower five to win. He did not let them down, whipping off his fifth doll with his last stick to take the leg and cup for the first time 21-20.

Eleven-year-old Elliot Greenough won the under 18 competition, defeating holder Ben Lyon 2-0.

Greenough set two in the first leg, Lyon replying with one. Lyon then set one in the next leg and to the biggest cheer of the night, Greenough clanged off the two dolls to give him the cup.

Pip Goulding and Den Sellar (Cricketers) defeated Andy Beal and Roger Goodall (White House) 2-1 in the Top Pairs trophy.

Beal and Goodall set eight in the opening leg, Goulding replied with a four and Sellar knocked off the five dolls to give them the first leg.

Cricketers could only set five in the next, which White House passed with ease. Cricketers set the final leg and with Goulding whipping off a six and Sellar hitting a five, a total of 11 was always going to be difficult to beat.

Beal replied with four, missing his last stick, and leaving Goodall with an impossible seven.

The Ted Houghton Supplementary Singles went to Paul Sawyer (Masons Arms) as he defeated Darren Cox (Team Monarch) 2-1.

Darren Cox didn’t have much luck in the Lower Pairs final as he and his partner Keith Bull lost 2-1 to Mark Joines and Chris Lewis from Jolly Postboys.

Cricketers Arms (Littleworth) won the Oxford Fours, defeating Jolly Postboys 2-0. The first leg went to three sticks after tying 7-7, and they won the second 9-8.

The Monty Greenway Shield saw Three Pigeons pip Cricketers Cowley 2-1.

In the final game of the night, Three Pigeons beat Garsington Sports Club in the Greene King Cup.

Garsington took the opening leg with a set of 25, but Three Pigeons stormed back to level with a set of 30.

In the final leg, Garsington set 24, before and it was left to Pigeons' anchor man Neil Lyon to whip off the two dolls for victory.
