James Constable revealed how a meeting of the strikers and the coaching staff a week ago played a big part in their good showing against Burton Albion.

Jamie Guy and he started to combine much better, with Constable bagging his fifth goal of the season after winning then converting a penalty, and Guy going off to a big ovation when he was substituted late in the second half.

"We had a meeting on Friday, with the manager and Mickey Lewis, where we tried to sort out our partnership," Constable said.

"It was about the runs we made and how we should link up, and personally I think it really helped."

Guy replaced none other than Teddy Sheringham when he came off the bench for Colchester in an FA Cup third-round tie last season, replacing the veteran ex-England striker after Sheringham had scored in the third round-tie against Peterborough United. But Posh won it 3-1.

Chris Carruthers and Lewis Haldane were also in exalted company in the FA Cup last season with Bristol Rovers knocking out Fulham and Southampton, among others, on their way to the quarter-finals.

Haldane played in Rovers' sixth-round defeat by West Brom, coming on as a substitute, while both players were involved in earlier rounds, when the Pirates came through two rounds in dramatic penalty shoot-outs.

There's a slight change to the rules for the FA Cup because both teams are allowed to name seven substitutes, rather than the usual five, with any three used during the game.

It's something U's manager Darren Patterson is all in favour of.

"I think it's a good idea," he said. "Having seven subs obviously gives you many more options from the bench.

"More men on the bench means you can have 'like for like' substitutions, and have specialist players for more positions."
