Oxford Hawks endured a depressing visit to the south coast as they lost 3-1 at Brighton in the South League – a defeat which sees them on one point after three Premier Division 1 games and propping up the table.

Hawks too often gave the ball away and failed to achieve any sort of cohesion in midfield.

Even a barrage of five short corners in succession didn't produce a goal for Hawks.

Brighton troubled them with a number of quick breaks. However, Hawks got the first goal with Freddie Coppin firing home after good work by Dan Money and Rupert da Silva.

Instead of driving home their advantage, Hawks surrendered more and more territory to Brighton, who were simply stronger in the tackle and more determined.

Brighton missed a penalty stroke, but it was no surprise when the home side produced a slick move to snatch a deserved equaliser. With five minutes left, Brighton caught Oxford on the break to take the lead, and a third goal followed in the last minute.

Banbury chalked up an emphatic 5-1 victory over joint leaders Spencer.

Richard Foreman opened the scoring by pouncing on a rebound after Simon Boardman's shot was well saved.

Spencer levelled with a deflected shot, but Banbury hit back when Tom Instone's shot was deflected in by Boardman.

Banbury then took control and two trademark goals from talisman Adrian Simons, and a fifth from a short corner drag flick by Tyson Nunneley, completed the rout.

Rover Oxford recorded a 6-4 win at Tring in the Regional League.

In Division 1, City of Oxford went down 4-1 at Wokingham.

They were undone by Wokingham's very slick short corner routine.

Ed Gonzales pulled a goal back ten minutes from time in open play, but by then the home side had already converted three of their four goals from short corner.

Abingdon's poor start continued as they were beaten 3-2 away to bottom side Leighton Buzzard, in a match which saw three penalty strokes awarded and three players shown yellow cards.

Buzzard went two up before Josh Tomlinson pulled one back and the home side added a third when, with Abingdon down to nine men, Joe Vernon scored his second.

Tomlinson bagged a late second for Abingdon, with a penalty stroke, after he was fouled when trying to shoot.

Witney lost 3-1 at home to Aylesbury. They gifted the visitors the last two goals after Grahame Matthews converted a short corner.

Bicester lost 5-4 at home to Bracknell, but Wallingford moved into second place by crushing OMT 5-1.
