Launton triathlete Nick Crutch flies the flag for Britain on the way to coming fifth in the Virginian Ironman in the United States.

Crutch, a personal fitness trainer, slipped into the warm waters of Lake Anna for the start of a race that would take 54hrs and 34 mins.

After the 7.2 miles lake swim he was faced with 336 miles of cycling.

This was followed by the small matter of 78.6 miles (three marathons) on foot.

Sleep was kept to a bare minimum of ten minutes at a time, as the race clock did not stop from the time the swim started until the finish line is crossed.

After a well-earned week off to allow blisters to settle down, he has begun training for next year’s race.

“Shhhhhhh! Don’t tell my partner Helena just yet," he quipped.”

Next year, he hopes to race various Ultra Distance Triathlons and will be raising funds for Launton Playgroup.
