Martin Green maintained his stunning dominance of his sport when he landed his fifth World Benchpress Championship title in Belgium last week.

The 34-year-old from Didcot was in record-breaking form as he swept to a convincing victory.

He has been unbeaten in these World Drug Free Powerlifting Federation championships since 2002, although it is his first title since 2005.

"I didn't enter in 2006 or 2007 due to other commitments," said Green, who trains at Apex Gym in Newbury and has his supplements sponsored by LAMUSCLE.COM. Green won the 100kg class – his actual body weight is 99.5kg – by lifting 245kg which improved his British record by 5kg. The runner-up managed only 200kg.

Despite the sucess, Green was a little disappointed.

"I was aiming to lift 250kgs, but it took me two attempts to get 245," he said.

"The conditions weren't ideal as I weighed in at 7.45am, but didn't lift until 8pm. I had to wait around a long time which drained my energy."

Green will have another go at this target when he defends his title in the British Championships in Bradford later this month.

Green, who works for Vodafone in Newbury, has already won the British title 11 times in the 18 years since he took up the sport.
