Wallingford's unbeaten run in South West 2 East came to an end as a disappointing last 20 minutes saw them go down 47-18 away to Cheltenham.

Although the final scoreline somewhat flattered the home side – Wallingford trailed by just two points as they entered the final quarter – Cheltenham were worthy winners.

Wallingford went ahead after just two minutes with a Jackson Sayce penalty from 40 metres, but Cheltenham came back strongly with two converted tries in two minutes.

It was looking as if it might be a long afternoon for Wallingford, but they recovered well.

After Pete Holton was held up five metres from the line, right wing Richard Turner hacked the ball ahead with great control to gather and score an excellent individual try.

Cheltenham added a penalty, but Wallingford hit back when No 8 Ian Jeffreys set up debutant centre Angus Brettel for a try, converted by Sayce, to cut the deficit to 17-15 at half-time.

Surman and Sayce exchanged penalties before two more Surman kicks kept the home side's noses in front.

Then came Wallingford's horrific last 20 minutes which saw Cheltenham run away with it, scoring four more tries, one of which was converted, to wrap up victory.
