Chinnor 20, Worthing 32

Chinnor threw away a hard-earned victory in six mad minutes at the end of this National 3 South clash.

Leading 20-13 with stoppage time approaching, they gifted Worthing three tries with some kamikaze play.

The defeat saw Chinnor slip back into the bottom three, while Worthing collected their first win and moved one place above the Oxfordshire side.

With a stiff wind in their faces, Chinnor had no choice but to grind out a victory.

And they looked like doing so as they mounted a rare counter-attack with just one minute of normal time remaining.

However, they flung the ball around in a style more akin to sevens rugby.

The net result was centre Alex Wallace losing possession, having back-peddled inside his own 22, and his opposite number Richard Kaye scoring a simple try.

Worthing fly half Ben Coulson slotted the conversion for 20-20, which the visitors probably deserved.

But just two minutes later, fly half James Cathcart appeared to be taken out off the ball, and before Chinnor could protest, centre Will Marshall had raced in to score.

At 25-20, Chinnor at least had a losing bonus point, but they threw that away as well – quite literally!

Wing Will Harris gobbled up Cathcart's loose pass and cruised in under the posts for Coulson to convert.

All this came after Chinnor had made a real fist of the second half.

The first period saw Worthing score on both their forays into the home 22 despite defending against the traditional Kingsey Road gale.

No 8 Paul Cox piled over from a tenth-minute scrum, while lock Charlie McGowan capitalised on a favourable bounce to notch on the half hour.

It was all Chinnor in between, with two Cathcart penalties giving them a 6-5 lead.

Hooker Arthur Ellis and scrum half Toby Prescott proved a real menace to Worthing, while Chinnor's try, on 27 minutes, was a fine move.

Eric Brown's strong tackle gave Chinnor possession on the left, and the ball quickly reached full back Richard Williams, who set up right wing Pip Seymour.

There was still plenty to do, but Seymour cut inside and powered over for Cathcart to convert.

Chinnor couldn't turn their pressure into more than a 13-10 half-time lead, but they came out fired up.

Skipper Matt Hutchings looked to have scored almost from the kick-off, and it wasn't long before Ellis nipped over from a quick penalty.

Cathcart converted for 20-10 and things looked good.

With the wind behind them, Worthing dominated the territory and wings Harris and Alex Nielsen wasted a great chance.

Coulson slotted a penalty on 56 minutes, but it was only when Chinnor sub- stitute Trevor Powell followed Worthing replacement prop Joe Marler into the sin bin, that the pressure mounted.

Worthing were twice held up by some great defence before Chinnor imploded.
