Oxford Hawks got their Women's South Clubs League Division 1 campaign up and running with an excellent 3-2 win at Wimbledon.

Hawks took the lead after only five minutes, when a clever early free hit found Ali Omell at the top of the D. She turned and rounded the keeper before slotting home from the tightest of angles.

They went further ahead when Helen Smith pounced on a loose ball at the top of the area, and smashed it past the keeper.

Wimbledon pulled one back through a goalmouth scramble before the break.

The interval came at a welcome time for Hawks, who were starting to tire, and they then went out strong again in the second half.

Excellent work up front from Amy Bryant and Cat Hulley caused headaches for the Wimbledon defence, before Hannah Williamson scored their third on the rebound away after her initial shot had been saved.

The final 20 minutes saw Wimbledon camped in the Hawks half. They pulled a goal back from a short corner to make it 3-2, but excellent defending from Jo Hopkins meant Hawks hung on.

In Division 3A, Oxford Hawks 2nd drew 2-2 at home to Henley. Ali Weetech and Helen Bleach scored for Hawks.

Banbury came from two goals fown to beat local rivals West Witney 3-2 at Drayton School, with the winner coming with the last touch of the game from Natasha Nunneley.

Banbury gave a league debut to Olivia Matthews and they also welcomed back Claire Durham, who scored with a classic far-post finish.

West Witney scored from their first attack, through Ange Rudman, and then doubled their lead when Sunny Ricketts capitalised on a mix-up in the Banbury defence.

Banbury dominated the second half. Captain Alison Sturla set the example by slamming home to give them hope and then Durham tied things up.

In the 63rd minute, Nunneley's penalty flick was well saved by Linda Billington and it looked like Banbury would have to be happy with just a point.

However, there was to be late drama as they forced a short corner and a well-worked moved allowed Nunneley to make amends with that late goal.

Promoted City of Oxford drew 2-2 at West Hampstead, but ended up disappointed not to have got all three point Christine Fraser got City's first goal, from a short corner, and Anna Nicholson the second as the team continued with their 3-2-3-2 formation which worked so well last season.
